How to

Slow Philips Android TV: what helps

Philips has sold TVs with Android TV for a long time. Older models in particular, with Android 7, 8 or 9, get slow after a few years: memory is small and the storage fills up with updates and caches.

Why a Philips Android TV gets slow

  • Little memory: the home screen, the Philips components and a streaming app have to share it.
  • Full storage: with little free space everything gets slower (see Storage full on your TV).
  • Recommendations from Philips and from services on the home screen.
  • A weak Wi-Fi signal, especially when the TV is far from the router (see Android TV buffering while streaming).

Turning on the developer options on a Philips

  1. Press the gear (Settings) and choose All settings.
  2. Choose Android settings, then About (under Device).
  3. Go to Build and press OK 7 times. You will see "You are now a developer".
  4. Go back to Android settings, choose Developer options (under Preferences) and turn on USB debugging.

Your Philips's IP address

Press the gear and choose All settings, then Wireless and networks. Choose Wired or Wi-Fi and then View network settings, and read the IP address.

What VYS TV does

With Optimise TV speed in the VYS TV app it happens in one go: VYS TV becomes the home screen, unnecessary apps and recommendations are turned off, streaming apps no longer run silently in the background, VPN apps may keep running and animations go to 0.5x. Before and after, the app measures free memory, storage, the number of processes, disabled apps, the home screen, animations, the connection, the Wi-Fi signal and whether the VPN is active. So you can see for yourself what it does on your TV.

Before every change the app makes a backup, and with Back to original the TV is as it was again (see Restoring the original home screen).

VYS TV does this for you

The app on your iPhone makes your Android TV or Google TV faster, with only your own apps, and restores everything if you want.

Questions

Does this work on a Philips with Android 7?

Yes, VYS TV also works on older Philips Android TVs. That is where the difference is greatest.

Does Ambilight keep working?

VYS TV changes the home screen and the background apps, not the TV's picture and light settings.

My Play Store says "no internet"

See Play Store: no internet, but Wi-Fi works: often the Google sign-in has expired.
