How to

Android TV buffering while streaming

A film that keeps pausing to load, or a picture that gets less sharp: on an Android TV or Google TV that is rarely the streaming service's fault. Usually it is the TV's connection, or the TV has too little memory left.

The Wi-Fi signal

  • TVs are often far from the router, behind a cabinet or in another room. A weak signal gives low speed and stuttering.
  • Choose your router's 5 GHz network if the TV supports it: faster and less affected by neighbours, though with less range.
  • A network cable is the most reliable. A cable to the router is often the biggest improvement you can make.

Apps and memory

Even with a good connection it can stutter if the TV has too little memory: background apps and a heavy home screen leave less for the app you are watching in. See Slow Android TV: causes and solutions.

What VYS TV shows and does

With Optimise TV speed VYS TV measures the connection (cable or Wi-Fi, and which band) and the Wi-Fi signal with its speed, before and after. So you can see whether the connection is the weak spot. The app also cleans up background work and replaces the heavy home screen, so more memory is left for streaming.

The app cannot do anything about a weak signal; then a cable or moving the router closer helps.

VYS TV does this for you

The app on your iPhone makes your Android TV or Google TV faster, with only your own apps, and restores everything if you want.

Questions

How do I see how strong my Wi-Fi signal is?

In the VYS TV app it is shown under TV details after optimising, together with the connection and the speed.

Does turning off a VPN help?

A VPN can cost some speed. If the VPN keeps dropping, read VPN on your TV keeps stopping.

Does it only stutter in one app?

Then it is often that app or the service. Try clearing the cache of that app or reinstalling it.
