VPN on your TV keeps stopping
A VPN on the TV has to stay on while you use other apps. On many Android TVs and Google TVs that goes wrong: the VPN app is closed in the background and the connection drops.
The causes
- Too little memory. Many TVs have 1.5 to 2 GB. When a streaming app opens, Android closes background apps to make room, and the VPN is one of them.
- A clean-up component of the manufacturer. On TCL TVs, TV Guard closes apps, including a VPN (see TCL TV Guard).
- Apps running silently in the background. Streaming apps and the home screen with recommendations use memory, even when you do not use them.
What you can try yourself
- Turn on connect automatically and start at boot in the VPN app, if it has those options.
- Remove apps you do not use and clear the cache of large apps (see storage full).
- Restart the TV properly now and then, not just standby.
What VYS TV does
With Optimise TV speed VYS TV puts the VPN apps it finds on the TV on the list of apps that may keep running in the background, turns off unnecessary background work and replaces the heavy home screen with a light one. On a TCL TV you also turn off TV Guard. The app deliberately does not set an "always on" VPN: then the TV blocks all traffic when the VPN is briefly gone.
VYS TV does this for you
The app on your iPhone makes your Android TV or Google TV faster, with only your own apps, and restores everything if you want.
Questions
Which VPN apps does VYS TV recognise?
The well-known VPN apps, such as ProtonVPN, Surfshark, NordVPN, ExpressVPN, PureVPN, CyberGhost, Windscribe, Mullvad and IPVanish. They get permission to keep running in the background.
Does the VPN turn on by itself when the TV starts?
That is up to the VPN app. VYS TV makes sure it stays on once you turn it on, not that it is always on.
Does this work on a Fire TV or Samsung?
No. VYS TV only works on Android TV and Google TV.
