How to

Turn off recommendations on Android TV and Google TV

Recommendations take up most of the home screen. The TV lets you turn some of them off; if you want them gone completely, you replace the home screen.

What the TV itself allows

  • On many models you can turn off previews and channels with recommendations per app in the home screen settings. The menu differs per brand and version.
  • On many Google TV devices there is an apps-only mode in the account settings. It removes the personal recommendations, but also other Google features.
  • The large featured bar at the top and the manufacturer's components often remain.

Gone completely with VYS TV

VYS TV replaces the standard home screen with its own home screen without recommendations: only rows with your own apps, with your own texts and background. The components that supply recommendations are turned off and streaming apps no longer run silently in the background. The home screen also becomes much faster.

How to start

  1. Turn on the developer options and USB debugging on the TV; the app shows where for each brand (see Enable developer options on your TV).
  2. Connect the VYS TV app on your iPhone to the TV via Wi-Fi.
  3. Tap Optimise TV speed.
  4. Arrange your home screen: rows, your own texts and a background photo.

Going back to the old home screen is a single tap; the backup of the original is always kept.

VYS TV does this for you

The app on your iPhone makes your Android TV or Google TV faster, with only your own apps, and restores everything if you want.

Questions

Do my apps still work afterwards?

Yes. Your apps stay as they are; only the home screen and the components with recommendations change.

Do the recommendations come back after an update?

A major system update may restore the old home screen. Then tap Optimise TV speed again; your layout is still on the TV.

Can I undo it?

Yes, with a single tap: Back to original.
