Slow TCL TV: how to make it fast again

TCL TVs with Google TV are affordable, but come full of extra TCL components: its own start page, apps for recommendations, messages and analytics, and TV Guard, which closes apps in the background. Together with the Google TV home screen that takes a lot of memory.

What runs extra on a TCL TV

  • The TCL start page and apps for TCL recommendations and messages.
  • Analytics and tracking by TCL in the background.
  • TV Guard, which closes apps to free memory, including your VPN (see TCL TV Guard closes your VPN).
  • The Google TV home screen with recommendations and previews.

Turning on the developer options on a TCL

  1. Press the Home button and go to the gear Settings (top right).
  2. Choose System and then About.
  3. Go to Android TV OS build and press OK 7 times. You will see "You are now a developer".
  4. Go back to Settings, choose System, then Developer options (at the bottom) and turn on USB debugging.

What VYS TV does on a TCL

With Optimise TV speed VYS TV becomes the home screen and the unnecessary TCL components and Google apps are turned off. Streaming apps no longer run silently in the background, VPN apps may keep running and animations go to 0.5x. A separate button turns off TV Guard. Before and after, the app measures free memory, storage and the number of processes.

Does the TV still work with the TCL components off?

Yes. Components the TV needs are locked in the app and are not turned off.

Does it come back after an update?

A major system update can bring back the old home screen or TV Guard. Then tap Optimise TV speed in the app again.
