VYS TV on a Chromecast with Google TV

The Chromecast with Google TV runs Google TV and works with VYS TV. The standard home screen is mostly a shop window for films and series; VYS TV turns it into a fast home screen with only your own apps.

What VYS TV does on the Chromecast

  • A calm home screen with only your own apps, in rows, with your own titles and a background photo. No recommendations and no ads.
  • Unnecessary apps and recommendations off, streaming apps that no longer run silently in the background, and faster animations. The app measures memory, storage and processes before and after.
  • Your iPhone as a remote control, with typing into a search field and a screenshot.
  • Sideload apps yourself: APK, XAPK or APKS.
  • A VPN that stays on when you open another app.
  • Always a way back: a backup of the original on the first connection, and Back to original.

Developer mode and USB debugging on the Chromecast

  1. Press the Home button and go to the gear Settings at the top right.
  2. Choose System and then About.
  3. Go to Android TV OS build and press OK 7 times. If it asks for a PIN, that is the one of your Google account.
  4. Go back to System, choose Developer options and turn on USB debugging.
  5. You find the IP address under Settings, Network & Internet, with your Wi-Fi network.

Then in the app

  1. Put your iPhone on the same Wi-Fi network as the Chromecast.
  2. Open VYS TV, choose Set up a new TV and continue to Connect to the TV; the app finds the Chromecast by itself.
  3. The TV shows "Allow USB debugging?": tick Always allow from this computer and choose OK.
  4. Tap Optimise TV speed.

Good to know

After a major system update, Google TV may restore its own home screen. Then open the app and tap Optimise TV speed again; your layout and profiles are still on the Chromecast.

Questions

Does it work on a regular Chromecast without a remote?

No. Only the Chromecast with Google TV (with a remote) has its own home screen and developer options.

Can I still cast to the Chromecast?

VYS TV changes the home screen and turns off unnecessary apps; casting itself remains part of Google TV. If you are unsure about a component, Back to original restores everything.

Where do I still see ads?

Inside streaming apps, ads remain as that app shows them. The VYS TV home screen has no recommendations or ads (see Removing ads from the Google TV home screen).
